Private Pilot Licence (PPL)

Fly almost anywhere in Australia, by day and in fair weather with a PPL

How much training is required for a PPL?

Qualifying for a Private Pilot Licence is usually achieved in two steps; first basic training leading to the Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL), and second Cross-Country exercises leading to the Private Pilot Licence (PPL) Flight Test. Basic training is usually completed in the Grob G115.

Navigation training starts on the Grob G115 with the option of moving up to the Cessna C182 Skylane if you wish.

We are more than happy to train you in your own aeroplane (subject to conditions) and our highly experienced Flight Instructors are likely to have hundreds of hours of experience in your aircraft type already. Unlike most flying schools, we don’t charge extra for using your own aircraft.

Contact us to find out more about our PPL course and BYO aircraft training.

What do I need to take the PPL course?

  • Minimum 15 years old to go solo (if you start when 14, you might be able to solo on your 15th birthday!)

  • Minimum 16 years old to attempt the Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) flight test

  • Minimum 17 years old to hold a PPL

  • Hold a CASA Class 2 Medical Certificate, or a CASA Basic Class 2 Medical (subject to some limitations).

  • Complete the CASA PPL(A) examination (you can self-study or we can provide coaching privately or in groups)

  • Complete a course to meet the CASA minimum requirements of 40 hours total (45-50 is usual), 10 hours solo flying, and 2 hours Instrument flying.
